Lesson 1. Crops and its types

What is CROP ?

If same kinds  of plants are grown in a large area then these are known as crops.

For example:  Wheat crop means all plants grown in the given area will be of wheat.

Kharif and Rabi Crops

(i) Kharif Crops : The crops which are sown in the rainy season are called kharif crops. The rainy season in India is generally from June to September.

Examples of kharif crops - Paddy, maize, soyabean, groundnut, cotton, etc.

(ii) Rabi Crops : The crops grown  in the winter season are called rabi crops. Their time period is generally from October to March.

Examples of rabi crops are wheat, gram, pea, mustard and linseed.

Do you know?

Here by crops we mean that these belongs to plants.  but according to Wikipedia crops not only mean two plants but  it belongs to animals also.

Thus in real, a crop is a plant or animal product that can be grown and harvested extensively for profit or subsistence.
