REACTION OF METALS WITH WATER
Metals react with water to form metal oxide or metal hydroxide with hydrogen gas.
Depending upon their reactivity metals combine with cold hot or vapour form of water.
- Sodium, Potassium, calcium combine even with cold water to form metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
2Na(s) + H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + H2 (g)
Ca(s) + H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2 (aq)+ H2(g)
- Magnesium react with hot water
Mg(s)+ 2H2O(l) → Mg(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)
- Calcium and magnesium when react with water then some of hydrogen gas formed during the reaction get attached with their surfaces. Due to this calcium and magnesium start floating over the surface of water during reaction.
- Aluminium, iron and Zinc are less reactive metals so this combine only with water vapours to form metal oxide and hydrogen gas.
2Al(s) + 3H2O(g) → Al2O3(s) + 3H2(g)
3Fe(s) + 4H2O(g) → Fe3O4 (s)+ 4H2(g)
- Silver and gold do not react with water because these are very low reactive then
Au + H2O → No reaction
Ag + H2O → No reaction
